“The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) today published a report which it claimed showed movie piracy cost the Australian economy $1.37 billion in lost revenue over a 12 month period as well as some 6,100 jobs” (Freri, 2011)
$1.37 Billion, thats the amount that Australia alone is said to have lost in just a year to online piracy and illegal downloading. 6,100 jobs taken from the entertainment business each year!
There are many reasons as to why someone would illegally download a movie, music or their favourite Tv shows. Its cheaper, easier, you don’t have to leave your house and you can spend that money on something else rather than the $40 to buy you favourite show. But no-one thinks of the ramifications of what it is actually doing.
Imagine for a minute that you are about to download a whole season of your favourite show. Lets use ‘Game of Thrones’ for example. Now imagine that when you download that all of your friends and their friends does the same and you all get to watch the show without spending your money to buy it. But this would then mean that out of the 6,100 jobs ‘Game of Thrones’ just became closer to losing some of the people that are making the show what it is. If piracy was to continue and everyone was downloading without paying how could they then go on to pay for the writers, directors, producers, actors, lighting, sound, camera guys, props, special affects, CGI, screen time, promotions, advertisements, stunts, choreographers, Editors, and everyone else that i forgot. They would need to cut jobs and costs and the show would be the same. They might not be able to afford to even keep making the show if its a loss. The ratings would fall because people wouldn’t be watching it and buying it so they cant see who likes it and it might end up being cut from television and then you wouldn’t have any more episodes of it to download.
Illegally downloading does more harm than good. You might just think well when i download its just me what will me downloading really do to harm the show. But everyone who downloads it thinks the same thing and it keeps going. If you really like your shows and you want to see if years from now still being made then..
Don’t Download, Pay for it if you love it.
